Understanding EVs And Hybrids
Do you know what makes an electric vehicle (EV) an electric vehicle, and a hybrid a hybrid? An EV is a vehicle that derives its power from one or more electric motors with energy from the onboard batteries, which require regular charging from a specialty wall outlet or charging equipment. For comparison’s sake, an EV does not produce exhaust emissions, whereas a gasoline-powered vehicle does. Meanwhile, a hybrid combines a gas engine with one or more battery-powered motors. The electric motor can provide a torque boost, or propel the vehicle on its own, as the gas engine, or the two can work in tandem with the engine and regenerative braking to recharge the battery. A plug-in hybrid is a type of hybrid vehicle, and it requires plugging in to charge the battery; most can provide an all-electric range for certain drives. While EVs and hybrids are certainly newer than their traditional gasoline counterparts, we are equipped with the tools and the knowledge for proper and current EV and hybrid car care. At The Noble Mechanic in Noblesville, Indiana, our EV hybrid service specialists are trained, experienced, and committed.
How To Care For EVs And Hybrids
Considering the makeup of EVs, they require less maintenance than a traditional gasoline-powered car. The major item that will need care and eventual replacement is the battery. Keep in mind, however, that the brake system, fluids, tires, steering and suspension, and chassis should be regularly inspected and tended to as needed. Since hybrid vehicles still do have a gasoline engine, you will need to remain on top of associated services such as oil and oil filter changes, spark plug replacement, and air filter replacement. You will need general inspections of the overall engine and its parts: the cooling system, radiator, starter, belts and hoses, and more. Some EV hybrid problems make themselves known via odd sounds, smells, or sensations, but others can go virtually undetected, which is why we strongly recommend annual (if not bi-annual) inspections. Routine checks allow us to confirm everything is in working order, or if there is a small or looming issue that needs addressing. At The Noble Mechanic, we specialize in EV hybrid service and repair for all makes and models. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help and keep your vehicle running in top condition.
